Difference Between Honors and Ordinary Degrees – In the UK, undergraduate degrees are ranked based on academic performance or course length. Specifically, degrees are divided into two classes, “Ordinary” (ordinary) or “Honours” (honorary).

Bachelor Degree Ranking

Undergraduate programs usually take about three to four years to complete, depending on the field of study: Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Science (BSc), Bachelor of Education (BEd) and Bachelor of Engineering (BEng).

If an “Ordinary” or “unclassified” undergraduate degree is available to those of you who have completed an undergraduate program but fail to qualify for a third class award (lowest rank in the system), college degree assessment), the “Honours” bachelor degree distinguishes academic rankings, respectively. -respectively:

  • First class awards (the first only about 10% of national students are given this rating)
  • Top second class honors (a 2:1)
  • Lesser second-class honors (a 2:2)
  • Third class awards (one-third at some of these universities is the lowest rank)
  • Pass (Ordinary degree – below this level will not receive a diploma)

There is also a type of degree called “Aegrotat Degree” for students who are unable to take the test for health reasons. It is an honorary title but has no rank.

However, one thing to note is that not all universities agree on “attaching” the word honorific. In Scotland, the difference between “Ordinary” and “Honours” is only to distinguish the length of the course.

Where “Ordinary” refers to a three-year full-time undergraduate program, “Honours” refers to a four-year full-time undergraduate program.

The Effect of Ranking On Graduate Programs

To be able to attend Master’s courses, applicants are generally required to have at least a 2:2 grade or higher. Some universities even consider students with a 2:1 rating to be commensurate with a Master’s degree.

However, students with regular degrees can still be admitted provided they gain relevant work experience. Candidates who apply to doctoral programs but do not hold a master’s degree are generally required to have a first-class or 2:1 bachelor’s degree.

Thus, it can be seen that the ranking results of your bachelor’s degree greatly affect your further studies. And the best way to have an honorary degree is to put in the effort now!
